How can astronomers determine the age of stars when we cannot watch them evolve over billions of years? Star clusters provide one of the best solutions: because their stars formed at roughly the same time, astronomers can use their positions on the H-R Diagram and patterns of stellar evolution to estimate the cluster’s age. Dating isolated stars is much more difficult, but techniques such as asteroseismology and measurements of stellar rotation offer promising ways to estimate their ages.
